Barbie Goes To Oz

dorothy barbieIn somewhat of a bazaar crossover; Mattel has just released a line of Wizard of Oz Barbie and Ken dolls. I get that the Wizard of Oz is a timeless classic, but in this day and age are little girls still interested in that movie? I guess Mattel ran out of colors for Barbie’s dress and decided to mix it up a bit.

If you look closely at all of the dolls, including Dorothy, the Good Witch, the bad witch, the Lion, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Man; you’ll see that they all resemble the characters from the movie with one exception. The Wicked Witch of the West is beautiful. They clearly just took a spare Barbie doll and put black clothing on her. It’s odd that they wouldn’t take the time and effort to mold some new heads for the doll with a huge ugly nose, which was easily the witch’s most defining feature.

Kitt Isn’t A Car Anymore….

Being the dad of two boys doesn’t get me in tune with the culture of young girls. You can insert your own joke about that here.

Kitt American GirlAnyway while stumbling around the web I saw a press release for casting calls for Kitt. Kitt is a character from the “American Girl” toy line which is 100% owned by Mattel. Mattel is working with HBO to make a movie about this doll/story character named Kitt. The film will be called “Kitt Kittredge: An American Girl Mystery.” The film will take place in Depression era America and star Abigail Breslin from Little Miss Sunshine.

Playmobil’s New Sports Line

playmobil skatePlaymobil recently launched a new line of play sets with a sports theme. There are two sports in the new line, Skateboarding/BMX Biking and Soccer. This move by Playmobil really goes into the “why didn’t some one think of this sooner” category. With children’s weight problems spiraling out of control, anything that fosters an interest in sports and outdoor activities is a welcome change for parents. Even if these are toys to be played inside, it is better than a screen that has them slaying dragons all day.

Webkinz Invasion

webkinz hippoIf your child doesn’t have a Webkinz yet, get ready to be begged for one. Webkinz is probably the biggest fad with the 5 to 12 crowd right now. Webkinz are stuffed animals with a digital twin on Webkinz.com. Webkinz come in a ton of different animals like, dogs cats, bears, koalas, and birds. Each Webkinz has its own unique code that identifies it with its online twin on Webkinz .com. Be warned, Webkinz aren’t in every toy store in the US. You may have to hunt around to buy one. Amazon.com has a huge selection in their future releases section of their toy department.

Webkinz.com is an online community, where children take care of their digital Webkinz and also can have fun gaming, participating in quizzes, competitions, or just chatting with other Webkinz owners. Webkinz.com is meant for kids aged 6-13 years. It is brilliantly designed to match the computer skills and intellectual abilities of children in that age group.

The entry to the Webkinz.com community is through a secret code, included with all new Webkinz or Lil’Kinz plush toys. Using that secret code, your child can adopt the virtual plush pet in the Webkinz adoption center, have a room for the pet, feed, exercise, and take care of it in a way one might does in the case of a real pet.

10 Feet of Waterfall Action

banzi waterfallI’ve seen a ton of the new types of inflatable pools at Target. If you haven’t they look very sturdy and range in size from small, for the kiddies, to huge. Big enough for several adults. They are built from Dura-Tech, which is a very strong kind of rubber. This new generation of pools seem to be built around that same principal that allows your neighbors to have those huge, inflatable lawn ornaments for the holidays. Basically they stay inflated via powerful fan that runs continuously.

Backyard fun has really reached a new level of fun (beyond inflatable pools) with the Banzai Sidewinder Falls from Manly. It was not too long ago that fun water rides and pool slides were only assessable at amusement parks and your ultra rich relatives’ house. Now you can have a ten foot tall water slide in less than 3 minutes. Yes three minutes. The Banzai Sidewinder Falls has a waterfall climbing wall, a slide and a shallow pool at the bottom of the slide. Kids can scale the waterfall and then slide down into the pool.

Help Your Kids Learn Important Phone Numbers

When I grew up there were two numbers a kid had to remember, your home number and 911. Plus phone numbers back then were seven digits instead of ten; you didn’t have to area codes for local calls. Now with cell phones and all the other ways to keep in touch, youngsters have a tougher time memorizing all of the ways to get a hold of mom and dad or emergency services if there is a problem. Try getting a 3 year old to remember their birthday let alone a ten digit number. Now Fisher Price has an answer to this issue.

Use Merlin to Save Your Cell Phone

MerlinIf your toddlers are anything like mine, they will do just about anything to get their messy hands on your precious cell phone or Blackberry. The little ones seem to always want to play with Mom and Dad’s button laden, noise making, flashy things. Our cell phones were probably the most sought after (expensive) gadget our kids want.

After trying to distract the kids with various toy cell phones and old real cell phones; I had an inspiration while looking at the retro toy section of my local Target. Merlin was the answer. Most of us probably played this simple, talking game when we were young.

For those you who don’t know about the magic of Merlin; is a bright red, hand held toy that can play a variety of games. The games range from pretty basic, like blackjack and tick tac toe to totally convoluted like magic square. To this day I still don’t know how to play the later. Merlin also makes tons of noises and the play buttons flash constantly.

Miniature Pony (No Stable Required)

Butterscotch Interactive Pony There are a few things that (stereotypically) every little girl wants; to marry a prince, to care for a baby doll, and to have a pony. Now every little girl can have her very own pony to love and care for. Hasbro has just released what may be the “IT” toy for little girls in 2007. It is the Butterscotch Interactive Plush Pony from their Fur Real Friends line.

Hasbro’s Butterscotch is about the same size as a miniature pony, which is just over three feet tall. Butterscotch is totally interactive. She does all the cute things a little girl’s vision of a pony would do like whinny, neigh, and blow a puff or air out of her nose. She also blinks, swishes her tail, and eats her plastic carrot. Butterscotch responds to voice by moving her head and ears. She is even strong enough for your little girl to sit on and go for make-believe rides. Butterscotch does not walk however so there is no danger of your daughter taking her over a flight of stairs.
